Maria was born May 3, 1982 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, raised in Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines, Iowa in 2000. She received a B.S. in Business Administration, concentrating in Finance, from the University of the Pacific in 2004. In 2008, she earned her J.D. from the University of Iowa College of Law. During law school Maria was a student writer for the Journal of Gender, Race and Justice and competed in the Baskerville Moot Court Competition. She also served as a judicial extern to the Honorable Celeste Bremer, Magistrate Judge for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa, in the spring of 2007.

Maria was admitted to practice in Iowa in 2008. She is a member of the American, Iowa State (Member: Young Lawyers Division), and Linn County Bar Associations.
