Chris was born in Clarinda, Iowa and raised in rural Page County, Iowa.  He graduated from South Page High School in 1984.  He obtained undergraduate degrees in History and Political Science from Drake University in 1988.  He graduated summa cum laude, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Beta Kappa.  Chris obtained his juris doctor from Drake University Law School in 1991.  He graduated order of the coif (second in his class) and was Editor in Chief of the Drake Law Review from 1990 to 1991. 

Since graduating from law school and passing the Iowa bar in June 1991, Chris has been a trial lawyer practicing with Cedar Rapids, firms.  From June 1991 to June 1994, Chris was an associate with the Tom Riley Law Firm handling almost exclusively cases for plaintiffs.  Since June 1994, Chris has practiced with Elderkin & Pirnie where he has done work for both plaintiffs and defendants.  He became a member of the firm in 2001.  Chris also served as an officer in the United States Army Reserves from 1988 to 1995. 

The emphasis of Chris’s practice is civil trial and appellate law.  He has tried over 40 civil jury cases as well as numerous cases to the court.  He has briefed and argued multiple appeals in both the Iowa Appellate Courts and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.  He represents both defendants and plaintiffs in personal injury, health care malpractice, civil rights, employment discrimination, contract, construction, and other civil litigation matters.  Chris is admitted to practice in the Iowa courts, the Northern District of Iowa, the Southern District of Iowa, and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals.  Chris is a fellow in the Iowa Academy of Trial Lawyers.  He is also a member of the Linn County Bar Association, the Iowa Bar Association, and the Iowa Defense Counsel Association.

Chris has done multiple continuing education presentations including the subjects of employment practices, discovery in civil cases, case evaluation, ethics, and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage.  Chris enjoys volunteering as a bell ringer for the Salvation Army and other work in the community.  He also enjoys spending time with his family and dog, hiking, gardening, and woodworking.
